The Artist & The Historical Background

By the time of the Details of Renaissance Paintings series Warhol enjoyed an international reputation epitomised by the Pop art iconography of the 1960s, from his Campbell’s Soup Cans to the paintings of Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor. The artist was closely associated with his New York studio, the Factory, which became a celebrated meeting place for artists, musicians and celebrities in the city. Opened in 1963 and closing in 1987 after the untimely death of Warhol, it was here that the artist first developed his unique version of the silkscreen printing process.

In the direct aftermath of Warhol’s death in 1987 his legacy was discussed almost entirely in relation to his 1960s Pop art, with the final two decades of his career overlooked as of lesser importance. Nevertheless in recent years critics have begun to re-evaluate the 1970s and 1980s, which are seen as essential to understanding Warhol’s artistic vision. Indeed by the 1980s there was much new experimentation in Warhol’s art as well as an interest in abstraction, influenced arguably by the emergence of artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. The period also saw the artist reflecting on his own place in art history, and the masterpieces of the High Renaissance become a touchstone from which Warhol interrogates his own legacy.
